Find a builder, installer, architect and more...
At the Environmental Home Center we have been developing relationships with building professionals in the Seattle area for years. The professionals we refer to our customers have a familiarity with green products, green projects, and the particular needs of our customers. They include architects, general contractors, installers, remodelers, painters, handymen and others and they have a long record of superior craftsmanship, attention to detail, and most importantly impeccable customer service. If you choose to hire a member of our service referral list for any project, or would like to recommend a professional to us, please let us know and we will give you a $25 gift certificate to our store.

Architect Sarah Susanka has sold more than 300,000 copies of "The Not So Big House," a book released by Taunton Press in 1999 at the height of the "McMansion" building craze. The book and its sequel, "Creating The Not So Big House," help many people see that by building less space, they can afford more of the features that make homes more personal and enjoyable. Sarah visited our store when she was in Seattle in February 2001 and has listed us on her Web site as a source for the high-quality, healthy building materials she advocates.

Sandra Slater, Sandra Slater Environments
Sandra Slater Environments is a recognized leader in environmentally sensitive, custom home and office design. We encourage green building practices by creating aesthetic, comfortable spaces that demonstrate the benefits of sustainable design while conforming to your needs. We seek clients who share this vision and who will use their projects as an additional example for others. Building green does NOT mean you have to spend any more money on construction or design. By incorporating green options at the beginning of the process, we can actually reduce costs. Proper siting, looking at solar gain/thermal losses, insulation, use of space, and a host of other issues are addressed. These principles also apply to renovating spaces. You can modify your existing space to make them both aesthetic and green.

Rob Harrison AIA: Harrison Architects

Along with Matt Freeman-Gleason of EHC, architect Rob Harrison was a founding member of the Northwest EcoBuilding Guild. Focusing on residential and small commercial architecture and interiors, his firm practices what he calls "lyrical sustainable design"--referring to the ineffable qualities that help to make a house a home and connect it to its land. With twenty-five years in the business, the last ten devoted exclusively to low impact architecture, Rob is one of the most experienced green architects in Seattle. His highly regarded web site contains a wealth of information on his own projects as well as local resources for his clients.

  Non-governmental organizations

Healthy Forests, Healthy Communities Partnership
Healthy Forest, Healthy Communities is a partnership dedicated to stimulating forest restoration and economic revitalization in the Pacific Northwest's rural communities. Partners include wood products manufacturers, land managers, retailers, non-profit organizations and others. Many of the businesses use wood that was harvested to maintain or restore the health of our forests. Some of this timberland has been certified as well-managed according to the standards of the Forest Stewardship Council, an international group that has taken the worldwide lead in promoting wise use of commercial forests. Other partners use recycled or reclaimed wood. As a retail partner of the HFHC partnership, the Environmental Home Center brings some of these products to consumers and builders. See our fir flooring and Oregon myrtle products.

Healthy Forests, Healthy Communities is a regional program of Sustainable Northwest, a non-profit organization dedicated to environmentally sound economic development in the region.

American Lung Association (ALA)
Every homeowner can improve indoor air quality with the right information and assistance from one of several programs aiming to help improve indoor air quality in residences. Whether you are building, remodeling or looking to make small improvements, there are resources available to help. ALA has programs for homeowners building a new home, remodeling or simply looking for ways to improve the quality of air in their homes.

The ALA Health House program for new construction strives to reduce moisture in the home, maintain low VOC levels, and control dust and dirt through filtration and ventilation. Independent third party verifiers are available to put their stamp of approval on homes that meet the Health Home program standards. The Going Green at the Beach green showcase home open for tours in Stanwood, WA, fall 2007 will carry this certification.

Additional resources include the ALA's Master Home Environmentalist program that has trained volunteers that visit existing homes to help homeowners assess indoor air quality and to provide suggestions for taking small steps that can make a significant impact. Finally anyone tackling a room remodel or an addition can use Section 4 of the Built Green Remodeler Self Certification Checklist to ensure a higher standard of indoor air quality for that particular project.
