How to use this product

Preparation

Clean out all areas to receive caulk down to sound wood or masonry. Remove all mildew, wax, dried-out fillers and powdery residue. Scrape off loose paint. Remove any rust or oil from metal surfaces. Wash the surface, rinse and let it dry. AFM recommends using SafeChoice Super Clean. Old wood surfaces may require priming. If any wood is rotted, repair as needed. Do not caulk over rotted wood. With painters’ tape, mask any surrounding areas where you do not want caulk to smear.

Application

Always have adequate ventilation. Make sure the surface is dry. Do not apply when the temperature is below 55° F or when the area to be caulked is in direct sun or hot to the touch. Heat causes the caulk to cure too quickly and may prevent adhesion. Sample test a small area to assure proper adhesion can be obtained. Apply the caulk directly from the container; do not dilute. Apply the tubed caulk as you would any caulk. For the bulk product, apply with a pastry decorating bag or a mortar joint filler. Install firmly into openings or joints, pressing to ensure contact. Tool with a knife or spatula to smooth and level the sealant. Keep the container closed when not in use. Do not allow caulk to cure on adjacent surfaces. Wipe off any smears immediately. When the caulk is thoroughly cured, the surface may be lightly sanded to make it smooth or even with adjacent areas.

Drying

When the temperature is above 55° F and humidity is moderate, caulk should fully cure in 24 hours. Thick beads of caulk dry more slowly, especially if the weather is humid.

Cleanup

Clean tools and equipment while still wet with SafeChoice Super Clean and warm water.

Storage

Unlike conventional caulks, Safecoat products are made without formaldehyde preservatives. Do not contaminate.
