Strippers
By their very nature, strippers are powerful concoctions that take off paint and other tough coatings. Imagine what they can do to your skin and lungs.

There is no way to formulate these products so that they pose no hazards. However, there is still a significant difference between the standard solution and ours. Most chemical strippers contain methylene chloride, a solvent that causes cancer in laboratory animals and is suspected of doing so in people. It evaporates quickly, so it’s readily inhaled by people who use it. Even a respirator doesn’t help: Methylene chloride passes right through.

Our strippers do not contain methylene chloride. Instead, for outdoor use we sell caustic strippers that quickly lift paint and other coatings, and then rinse off with water and neutralize with our wood brightener. These strippers require careful handling, certainly, but by following simple directions, you can use them safely. They generate no toxic fumes.

For interior stripping jobs, we sell a slow-acting remover that does not burn skin or create irritating odors. It is remarkably pleasant to use, and it works well if you give it time. However, we caution that it does contain solvents that have not been thoroughly studied for possible health effects. The tests are only now being conducted. We are following them closely, but in the meantime, we recommend going beyond the safety precautions on the label. It states that the product generates “no harmful fumes” and does not require use of gloves. There is, so far, no clear evidence to indicate whether these claims are true. Be prudent. Use this product only with adequate ventilation. And wear gloves—reusable ones, not thin disposables. (The manufacturer says that any type of waterproof glove should be fine.)
This line includes our exterior strippers, as well as brighteners and other deck cleaners that help keep outdoor wood looking its best. Some of the products cannot be shipped by UPS.
Although this paint and varnish remover can be used outdoors, it is safe to use indoors because it is low-toxic.
