Conventional caulks and adhesives have been formulated with just one purpose in mind: getting the job done. We insist, however, on products that get the job done and protect human health and indoor air quality.
Read the official safety sheets for some conventional caulks and adhesives and you may be as interested as we were in the high percentage of dangerous solvents they contain. For one product we checked, nearly a third of the tube is filled with hexane (13 percent), acetone (13 percent) and toluene (8 percent).
These solvents present a range of problems. Acetone is extremely flammable. Hexane and toluene are as well, but they also present very serious health risks. Hexane damages the nervous system and can cause symptoms similar to multiple sclerosis. Toluene is a narcotic that wreaks havoc on the heart, liver and kidneys and can interfere with the body’s ability to form clots to stop bleeding.
