Looking for a building professional experienced with our products?
At the Environmental Home Center we have been developing relationships with building professionals in the Seattle area for years. The professionals we refer to our customers have a familiarity with green products, green projects, and the particular needs of our customers. They include architects, general contractors, installers, remodelers, painters, handymen and others and they have a long record of superior craftsmanship, attention to detail, and most importantly impeccable customer service. If you choose to hire a member of our service referral list for any project, or would like to recommend a professional to us, please let us know and we will give you a $25 gift certificate to our store.

Finding a product

Why do I need to call to order some of the products on this Web site?
For some products, we need to speak directly with customers before they order. In some cases, we need to convey specific information, such as the roll-width of carpets. In other cases, we need to discuss shipping options. Some products are bulky and cannot be shipped via UPS.

How do I search for a product?
You can use our product search capability to search from our list of all products. Please enter keywords such as the manufacturer’s name, the product name, or the product’s use. If you are not sure what you are looking for, click on the link under the search box for a product list. If you don’t find what you’re looking for, please call or e-mail. Not all of our products are listed on our Web site.

Can I buy samples of products?
We provide a variety of samples for many of our products, including paints, linoleum, carpets and flooring. Call 1.800.281.9785 or purchase samples directly from the Web site. The sample cost is refunded upon return of the sample. Testing samples for chemical sensitivities and quarts of paint mixed to test color are not refundable or creditable to purchases.


Ordering & checkout

What is the shopping cart?
Just like a shopping cart in the physical world, the online shopping cart is where you place all the items you'd like to buy. Click the "Add to cart" button for any item you'd like to order, and we'll place it in your cart for you—and show you a list of everything that's currently in your cart. When you're ready to place your order, just access your shopping cart and click the "Checkout" button.

How do I add additional items to my order?
You can add as many items to your order as you like. Whenever you are at a product page, simply click on "Add to cart" and the item will be added to your shopping cart. To view the items that you have placed in your shopping cart, click on "View cart" in the top right of your screen. There you can modify your order to delete items or increase the quantity of items.

How do I change or cancel an order?
If you haven't yet gone through checkout, simply go to "View cart" and click "remove" next to any item you want to remove from your order. You can change order quantities as well. If you have already checked out, please call our store at 1.800.281.9785 and we'll be happy to help you.

What if I have a problem while placing an order?
Although most online orders go very smoothly, occasionally you may experience some bumps in the road. If you're not sure about what to do next to complete your order, try beginning at "View cart." There you should find all the products that you have selected and be able to edit your selections. In most cases, you'll get back on track and easily complete your order. If you continue to have trouble with your order, please contact us.

When will my credit card be charged?
Your card is charged when the order ships. Most products are shipped within one day. Some may take longer depending on availability and customization. We will notify you soon after your order is placed to inform you about its shipping status. In the case of special orders or custom orders (carpet, custom paint tinting, cabinets, etc.) you will be charged at time of order with a non-refundable deposit. The balance of your order will be charged when the order ships. All freight is charged as a prepaid item before the order ships and is not refundable. Sorry—we do not ship orders COD or freight collect.

Can I place my order by e-mail?
We designed our site's ordering system to protect the security of your personal information, including your credit card number. Since ordinary e-mail is not secure in the same way, we cannot accept orders sent via e-mail. For your security, please do not include your credit card information in any e-mail you send us. You can order by phone at 1.800.281.9785.

What sort of order confirmation will I get?
If you've given us your e-mail address, we'll send you an order confirmation by e-mail, to be followed in by a shipping notification e-mail. For most orders, the shipping notification will include information on how to track your shipment.

How do I change my account information (name, e-mail, address, password, etc.)?
Simply click on "My account" in the top right of your screen. You will be asked for your user name and password. Enter this information and click on "log in." You will then be presented with your ship-to and bill-to information, all of which you can change and save.

How can I check on my past orders?
For your added security, we do not store your past order information or credit card information in our Web site database. But we do keep a record of your past purchases in our retail store's system, so if you have any questions about this, please call us at 1.800.281.9785.

 


Shipping & returns

What is your shipping policy?
The first question many people have is how long will it take to get their order. Our goal is to get your order to you on time, undamaged, at the lowest cost possible. Our standard shipping method is UPS ground service. Most orders are shipped within five business days. (Add time for custom orders.) We reserve the right to use common carrier or other shippers and services, depending on the size of the order and its destination. Shipping costs less than many people expect. For orders sent to any address in the lower 48 states, we charge $10.00 on orders up to $75. On orders above $75, we charge 15 percent of the price.

Orders shipped to Alask and Hawaii must be completed via phone because shipping prices and shipping options vary. Please call 1 800 281-9785 for these orders.

What about shipping water-based coatings in cold weather?
Shipping our water-based coatings during the winter adds a few complications for customers who live beyond Western Washington. Water-based coatings are damaged by freezing and that's as true of our Safecoat line and American Pride as it is of common latex paints. UPS does not protect shipments from freezing in transit, and we have no packing method that will overcome this. It is the customer's decision, not ours, whether to go ahead with an order if weather conditions are bad between our store and the point of delivery. But there are some things we can do to help—and we're happy to do so. If you are concerned, please ask us to ship early in the week so that your order will not sit in a truck over the weekend. Give us a delivery address that will always be attended so the shipment will not sit in the cold after the driver releases it. (This is where paint is most likely to freeze.) You can also ask us to use expedited delivery with "signature required." There is an extra charge for this.

Can you send me my product via overnight express?
Yes. If you wish to have a product sent via expedited delivery service, please call one of our sales representatives at 1.800.281.9785 and they will arrange for that. Unfortunately, we cannot ship products transacted over the Web site via overnight express. These are shipped via standard ground service to the lower 48 states

What is your return policy?
Our goal is to provide our customers with the best product, value and service in the marketplace today. If you should encounter a problem with one of our products please contact us so we can work to resolve the problem. If for some reason a return is necessary we will replace the product or refund its purchase price in the payment method tendered. All claims must be made in a 30-day period and include the receipt; material must be returned or arrive at our warehouse in resalable condition. Refunds do not include any freight charges; we will not accept freight collect or COD shipments on returned materials. Except for defective product we are unable to accept returns on product that is of a custom nature. Cabinets and bound rugs are non-returnable/exchangeable. Materials that have been cut, modified or installed or applied by you and your contractor are not returnable under any circumstance. In the case of paint, if there is a question on color it must be resolved before the paint is applied. There are no refunds on coatings that have been applied. Opened bedding and mattresses are not returnable except in the case of manufacturer's defect. We reserve the right to charge a restocking fee on any return.

What are the warranties on the products that you sell?
Unfortunately we cannot warranty the products that we sell. The sole warranty associated with a product is the warranty provided by the manufacturer, if any. We are happy to work with you to resolve any problem that you may have with any product that we sell. We cannot be liable for any consequential damages, incidental damages, for loss of use, property or profits or any other damages of whatever kind or however rising. Will you rent or sell my personal information?
We deeply respect the privacy of our site's visitors. We have set up this Web site so no one has to divulge any personal information to learn about better ways of building and remodeling. If you choose to share personal information we will not rent or sell it to a third party without your explicit consent. Our privacy policy explains why and how we will use that information. If you have any questions or concerns about your privacy while visiting our site, please contact us directly.

How do I know that my credit card information will be protected?
Our site uses standard encryption technology to protect transactions at our online store. When you go to “Checkout” you will notice that you will be on a secure server. There are two ways to tell if you are interacting with a secure server: First, the URL in your browser window will begin with “https://” instead of “http://”. Second, a small lock icon will appear in the bottom right of your window frame or in your browser toolbar. Will my contractor work with the products that you sell?
We obtain and sell products that work as well or in some cases better than more commonly found materials. Our experience has been that most contractors are quite pleased with our products when they are accurately informed and supported on their use. We are always very happy to speak with your builder or carpenter about our products.

Can I find these products at my local hardware store?
Most likely not. You will certainly be able to find some products that perform similar functions, but will fall short in providing the total performance and value that our products provide. I'm having trouble viewing your Web site—the fonts appear distorted or uneven.
This may be that you are using a Netscape browser. Our site is designed primarily for Internet Explorer browsers. We are currently configuring it to appear better for Netscape browsers, but unfortunately some Netscape users might have trouble viewing it, especially with earlier versions of the browser. Your Web pages are wider than my computer screen. How can I see the full width of the pages without scrolling left to right?
Try setting your monitor to a resolution of 800 x 600 or higher (832 x 624, 1024 x 768, etc.). To change monitor settings:

  • Windows users—go to Start menu: Settings: Control Panel: Display
  • Mac users—go to Apple menu: Control Panels: Monitors (or Monitors & Sound)

To order, does my browser need to be set to "accept cookies"?
Yes. Your browser has to be set to accept cookies before you can place an order. This way we can make sure to track what you place in your shopping basket as you move from page to page within our site.
